So the Navy has given it's highest civilian honor to Nancy Reagan on the occasion of the christening of the USS Reagan... wonder what they gave Jane Wyman?

Apparently the main problem with "The Brown Bunny" is that it's considered quite tedious except for the sex. What's wrong with the sex is that you see a penis (most certainly a prosthetic stand in.) BUT STILL!!! So it goes. By sheer volumn, I'm sure more has been written in the press about the depiction of this act than "Irreversible's" rape scene and "Breaking the Waves" put together. What's interesting to me is that neither of these brutal films, although controversial, ever reached the pitch of scandal Gallo achieved through a scene, that from all I am able to gather, featured neither violence or nor coercion. It's a strange world we live in.
I haven't heard about Vincent Gallo's "Brown Bunny" or any controversy. Hugely ironic that Europeans, especially the French, would be opposed to fellatio on film. I'll have to check it out. And Meg Ryan was on the jury of judges at Cannes? Also ironic.
I saw the "I'm really gonna lose my shit" look on Winona Ryder's face when Angelina Jolie got the Oscar for "Girl Interrupted". She hasn't been the same since. And I didn't even think Angelina deserved that award---have never liked her acting, or personality, that much.
The last movie I saw was "The Shipping News" with Kevin Spacey and Judi Dench. It was really great, though of course not as good as the book by E. Annie Proulx, which I encourage everyone to read. Mentioning Judi Dench reminds me that I saw an interview with Madonna when she was performing in some play at the London Theater (I think it was on Bravo), and she said the sign on her dressing room door said "Judi Fucking Dench", which I thought was hilarious.
Will have to check out those movies you mentioned, Tony, but "Harold and Maude" is one of my all-time favorites. Totally life-affirming.

Movies...Anybody heard about the shit-storm at Cannes over Vincent Gallo's "Brown Bunny?" Seems those legendary European purveyors of cinematic sexuality are aghast because there's fellatio in it. Oh dear, oh dear...And of course what the American press has done with the story has been completely inaccurate as far as I can tell; I watched the press conference too and Chloe Sevigny did not appear to me to show "increasing distaste for Gallo's remarks," nor did he brag about firing Winona Ryder. He DID say she was too tanked on some kind of pill to work, which clearly was breaking some It-Girls club code of silence and made a lot of the press corps visibly nervous. Oh yeah, and Meg Ryan was sitting on his jury. So now his movie's being called "possibly the worst film ever shown at Cannes." (I'd like to see a list...Wasn't "The Night Porter" shown there, too?) It's like having your horse shot out from under you at the starting gate- twice, because he got robbed with "Buffalo '66," too. NOW I've got something to be mad at the French about.
Ok, so in spite of the largest increase in the deficit in recent memory, if not ever, Bush and Co. have decided to give us a tax cut in order to create jobs. Since the time Bush proposed his first tax cut, his leadership has cost America 2 and a half million jobs. Gee, thanks guys!

In re to The Bystanders - it died a natural death:
Rob Russell is now, appropriately, Rob Russell & the Sore Losers
Bass player Brandon Story is with Reel Time Travelers.
I haven't played much music since.
Not sure about drummer Alan Gamble and Robert Alfonso in regards to musical endeavors.

You know, Lisa, I'd totally forgotten that Donnie's dad was in the Geography Dept. For some reason, I had this idea that he was in the Math dept. I always thought that, from the time I was a kid. Sorry, Donnie. I hope they're still able to get a lot of info on the fossil site in Gray, which is really fascinating.
Have not seen either the "24-hour party people" movie or "holes". The last movie I saw that I loved was "catch me if you can" with Leonardo Dicaprio and Tom Hanks---a film about Frank Abignale, a big con-man in the 60's who now works for the FBI. I don't find Tom Hanks very believable in most roles, but he was really great, I thought. Am really looking forward to seeing The Matrix Reloaded. Maybe we should all recommend our top 3 movies for Brook's friend in Florida.

let's sell space to Budwiser to paint the top of the mini dome like a can of beer ,, things like that outside the box are the way to go !! ok now start having top bands come thru and have concerts!!! with a local as the warm up band....and what ever happen to that band "the bystanders" in JC.????
In regards to the Buccaneers name:
My theory is that they wanted something that sounded like Volunteers and Mountaineers was already taken
by Appalachian State (whose athletic programs precede ETSU's).
I have no facts to back this up.
I read somewhere it was because of a football team in Big Stone Gap, Va. around 1905 ? ?? ,, dont rem exactly how the leap was made to Johnson City ,,,,must have had it written on the jerseys or something like that ,,,

Giant fake objects...perfect symbolism for giant fake programs inside. The mini dome has been entirely given over to the athletics program (apparently there are still sweaty jock-types running around post-football excision) except for Ditty's lab. That's right, the former Ms. Hagardorn is braving it almost solo except for a handful of other toxicologists in the last outpost of the Medical School still left in the mini dome, all other departments having been moved to "Valhalla 2" some time ago. She tells me the athletes think the eye wash station is a water fountain. I look for some experimentation to occur on these sub-rat creatures in the near future. Resources are scarce and "waste not, want not" should be the new watch words for every college department. And wasn't Donnie's dad practically the whole Geology department?
I always wondered why ETSU sports teams were called the Buccaneers. Last I looked, we weren't anywhere near an ocean.
They're also getting rid of the top notch Geography, Geology, and Geomatics program. Darn.

Would anyone be interested in raising funds to have a brass plaque placed on the Washington County Courthouse with Matthew, Chapter 6, Verses 5 and 6 engraved on it? We could put it on the wall with the 10 commandments!
have a kenny chesney concert in the mini dome ???? save the buc's .. yeh right ... not one alumi called when it was first run up the flag pole ,, no one saluted ...will we also see the band scolarships fade away ? ... guess so ..

Hmmmmm. Wonder what will become of the Half Ass tro Dome? It's sooooooo beautiful.... and goes so well will the Pal's Sudden Service across the street.
Wouldn't it be great if ETSU adopted the Pals aesthetic for campus? They could have giant fake objects on top of the buildings representing the programs inside.
