Letterman O'Reilly SMACKDOWN

In this posted clip, Letterman mockingly tells guest Bill O’Reilly:
"The President himself, less than a month ago said we are there because of a mistake made in intelligence. Well, whose intelligence? It was just somebody just get off a bus and handed it to him?"

Letterman demands:
“Why the Hell are we there to begin with?"

When O’Reilly points out that the British, Russians and Egyptians also presumed Iraq had WMD, Letterman retorts:
“Well then that makes it all right?" Turning unusually serious, Letterman soon lectures: “I'm very concerned about people like yourself who don't have nothing but endless sympathy for a woman like Cindy Sheehan. Honest to Christ. Honest to Christ."

That prompts O’Reilly to contend: “No way a terrorist who blows up women and children is going to be called a ‘freedom fighter' on my program."

To which Letterman fires back:
“I have the feeling about 60 percent of what you say is crap.”

here's what O'Reilly had to say about Letterman in 2001:

"The late-night program hosted by David Letterman is the toughest interview show on television.

That's because Mr. Letterman is a smart guy who can spot a phony with telescopic accuracy and expects his guests to bring something to the table. If a guest begins to sink on this show, the bottom is a long way down."

anyone else see this last nite?

i have to say...while it was great 'theater,' in terms of truth-telling...and therefore was great could tell that the show suffered for it. letterman didn't seem to enjoy the exchange and didn't recover his balance afterward.

it made me think about how fragile comedy is. i got the feeling that Letterman had too much pent-up anger, which is what made it real and wonderful to ME -- but, putting myself in his shoes, i can totally imagine him not being very happy with the segment -- which makes me respect the moment even more.

The segment made me uneasy for a moment. Letterman's always in control. Almost not so, this time. He really had the "I should strangle you" look. And can you blame him ? O'Reilly is an amphibian. You can very nearly see his bat-wings in that photo. Lecherous, komodo-dragon, webfooted, swamp-wretch, awful-man.
