What do Madonna and Katherine Harris have in common?
They both — it seems — have turned to the healing powers of Kabbalah water.
Harris, Florida’s former Secretary of State, who sparked worldwide controversy when she stepped into the 2000 elections and helped George Bush win, oversaw a program in which some diseased trees in Florida were treated with water provided by associates of the trendy Kabbalah Centre. The cure didn’t take.
Bottled Kabbalah water is a favorite of celebs such as Madonna, Ashton Kutcher and Britney Spears. Some leaders of the controversial Kabbalah Centre reportedly claim that the drink has the power to heal diseases such as cancer and AIDS, but skeptics say it’s simply bottled H20 that’s been blessed.
Under a program promoted by Harris, a rabbi and a cardiologist worked with researchers to test “Celestial Drops” on canker-infested orange trees in 2001, according to the Orlando Sentinel, which went on to quote a state scientist as declaring that the “product is a hoax and not based on any credible science.” The product, it turned out, was merely water. this is not an invitation to RAPE ME
(this is something i wrote for Democratic Underground that made it to the Greatest Page -- meaning, people liked it and voted 'it up." i'm totally honored that people connected with my idea here. i want to share this with my fellow JC folk because -- well -- maybe The Fuzzy Hole isn't getting enough respect. no, that's not it... i want to share this with you becausei KNOW you won't let me down. i know you guys will flame the hell out of me. that's what friends and family are for. :) --- brook oh, click on the link above to see the post with all the formatting and links -- i'm too lazy to re-do it.)
This is one ad in a series produced for the L.A. Commission Against Assault on Women. Lets take a moment to think about what this ad is saying, and honestly examine our attitudes regarding the Duke rape controversy.
This ad appeared in a 1997 issue of Lürzer's ARCHIVE -- a professional journal for advertising. I've used ARCHIVE as a creative tool for years, and every time I have flipped through this issue, I stop at this ad and think, "one day we will face this in the media and it's not going to be pretty."
That day has come.
There's five other concepts in the series, btw -- a homeless theme (this is not an invitation to rape me), a prostitute (this is not an invitation to rape me), a girl in a bathing suit (this is not an invitation to rape me), a phone number on a napkin (this is not an invitation to rape me), and a couple dancing. You get the picture. Don't make me scan them.
Since the indictments came down yesterday I've been pretty disappointed in the reaction and research skills of my DU colleagues. If screen names are any indication, the problem knows no gender bounds. We can't blame this on the boys. This is a very ambiguous controversy -- and one that pulls on every kind of heart string.
This issue is clouded by issues of race. Black accuser. White accused. Shades of Tawana Brawley. Don't laugh -- I've seen it said right here on DU. The controversy is clouded by our fascination with court cases. "Calling Judge Judy," might be clever forum repartee, but it minimizes the severity of the crime. Does Judge Judy try gang rape cases? I didn't think so. Some people are angry that Duke is "being dragged through the mud," and that "the whole lacrosse team has been convicted without a trial." This claim comes from the fact that the team has been reprimanded -- as if they were reprimanded for the rape. They were reprimanded for serial violations of code.
Without examining the merits of the case, we can examine the attitudes that polarizing progressives and democrats on the issue of violence against women.
Does it make a difference to you that the accuser is an exotic dancer?
Does it make a difference to you that she is black and the accused are white? How so?
Does it make a difference to you that she returned to finish the gig? Why might she have done that?
Do you think she has a motivation for reporting a crime? Or for not-reporting a crime?
Does it matter that she is economically less advantaged than the accused? Is she a gold-digger?
What about the DNA? Can there be a rape without a positive, one-to-one DNA match?
What about the power structure in Raleigh/Durham? How do the cards stack? Against accuser. Or accused?
How you answer these questions will partially unpack some of your beliefs about rape. It won't reveal all your beliefs, but it will start to crack the code. And remember... where there's absolute belief, there's little room for thought.
We don't have to "try this case" in the media -- but the media is EXACTLY where we look for a REFLECTION of ourselves. What are you seeing in the mirror?

The Dixie Chicks are OUTLAW COUNTRY
Click on the link above to watch the new video for Not Ready To Make Nice, and tell me the Dixie Chicks aren't the most important 'country' act in the last generation.
(this is verse is the money...)
I made my bed and I sleep like a baby
With no regrets and I don’t mind sayin’
It’s a sad sad story when a mother will teach her
Daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger
And how in the world can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they’d write me a letter
Sayin’ that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over

(theory) BUSH ISN'T THE LEAKER
(here's something to consider. i'm not defending ommander bunnypants, but this has a ring of truth to it -- brook)
I've never seen a post about something everyone is talking about sink so fast! This is a very interesting premise: Bush really didn't know squat, and Cheney is the actual leaker. Something is serious wrong with the current 'official story.'-----A Couple o' Random Thoughts Regarding Leaky Libby:Anonymous Liberal over at Glenn Greenwald's place is right: something doesn't add up here. Here's the exact quote from the court document filed by Patric Fitzgerald: 'Defendant's participation in a critical conversation with Judith Miller on July 8...occurred only after the Vice President advised that the President specifically had authorized defendant to disclose certain information in the NIE.' So Libby never heard it from Bush, only that Cheney said that Bush said so.Now here's Cheney back in February, talking about shooting faces and leaked secrets with Fox 'News' host Brit Hume: 'There is an executive order that specifies who has classification authority, and obviously focuses first and foremost on the President, but also includes the Vice President.' This was in response to Hume asking Cheney if he had ever declassified material 'unilaterally.'
So Cheney was asserting that he had the power to classify and declassify material without the President's 'okay.' By the way, the executive order itself says that the Vice President may do the classification voodoo dance 'in the performance of executive duties.' In other words, Cheney's own words imply that he could have given Libby the go-ahead without Bush's approval and remained in the realm of 'legal' (especially considering that the White House is asserting that the President can't really 'leak' anything, an absurdist defense discussed below). Perhaps someone can connect these magical dots.
The Rude Pundit believes this at the bottom: Cheney's a lying piece of shit and the President is a rube and an idiot of titanic proportions (fuck all those people who say, 'No, he's really not that dumb'). Either Cheney outright lied to Libby about Bush giving the thumbs-up or the conversation went something like this: Dick Cheney slithered into the Oval Office and said, 'George, listen, there's some shit I'm gonna get Scooter to do. You don't give a happy ratfuck, right?' And the President said it was fine, whatever, lemme play more Madden. So Bush 'knew' in the sense that he was told, but 'knowing' and 'Bush-knowing' is a little like the difference between telling your husband you love him while lying in bed awake together or while he's in a coma."

In Today's News
So Katie "Slow Pitch" Couric is leaving the Today Show. This is probably just as well. This morning she interveiwed Bill "The only Senator trained to perform abortions" Frist about legeslation he had introduced to create a nationwide registry of sex offenders. In the interveiw she pointed out that this registry would not stop child molesters as so many of them do not have criminal records many are "doctors, lawyers, accountants..." Katie (and I feel we are on a first name basis) didn't mention that they are often REPUBLICAN EMPLOYEES OF THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURTIY!!! Ya know, I would have thought something like that might have come up. I mean, she has a guy that is the Senate Majority Leader, 4th in line to the President, a guy that was instrumental in creating the Dept of Homeland Security, talking about child molesters, and not once did she think "Hey I should ask him about those perverts that are working at the DHS!!!!" Nope that didn't work it's way into the conversation at all...
Surprisingly, she did think to ask Frist if he thought that the Tom Delay affair would hurt republicans in the fall (he didn't think so by the way)but she forgot to ask:
"Is your filing of the sex offender registry bill so quickly have anything to do with the flak you Republicans are getting for having so many molesters on staff?" or
"Do you think that so many republican officials actually being child molesters will undermine republican credibility when it comes to stopping child molesters?" or
"Gosh Senator, with so many republicans getting nabbed trolling for 14 year olds online do you really think the republicans have any moral authority on this issue? or
"Gee Senator Frist, which are there more of, Republicans that have taken illegal money from Abramoff or Republican child molesters at DHS?" or
"Senator, is it true many republican officials favor twenty seven year olds simply because there are twenty of them?"

Man held as terrorism suspect for playing the Clash!
(file under "I Shit You Not" -- brook)
LONDON (Reuters) - British anti-terrorism detectives escorted a man from a plane after a taxi driver had earlier become suspicious when he started singing along to a track by punk band The Clash, police said Wednesday.
Detectives halted the London-bound flight at Durham Tees Valley Airport in northern England and Harraj Mann, 24, was taken off.
The taxi driver had become worried on the way to the airport because Mann had been singing along to The Clash's 1979 anthem "London Calling," which features the lyrics "Now war is declared -- and battle come down" while other lines warn of a "meltdown expected."
Mann told British newspapers the taxi had been fitted with a music system which allowed him to plug in his MP3 player and he had been playing The Clash, Procol Harum, Led Zeppelin and the Beatles to the driver.
"He didn't like Led Zeppelin or The Clash but I don't think there was any need to tell the police," Mann told the Daily Mirror.

Son of Arizona Senate President (R) sodomizes 18 boys, will walk on plea
(geez folks -- it's the day for GOP sexual terror. here's something else i ran across... waaaay scarier than the Homeland Security perp. These guys are getting the biggest REPUBLICAN SWEETHEART DEAL ever. Sodomizing collegues attending (get this) "a weeklong student government leadership skills camp." so, my question is WHAT is it about REPUBLICANism that corresponds to this sort of criminal behavior? Why the need to assert power in sexual, psuedo-sexual, sadomasochistic terms? have fun thinking about that. i'm going to see if i can't find some pretty flowers to look at -- brook)
PHOENIX (AP) - Two young men charged with sodomizing 18 boys at a youth camp last year have been offered a plea agreement that may net them little jail time and no record of sexual assault.
Clifton Bennett, 18, the son of Arizona Senate President Ken Bennett, and his co-defendant, Kyle Wheeler, 19, were charged in January with 18 counts of aggravated assault and 18 counts of kidnapping for the incidents, which happened at a youth camp last June. The younger Bennett confessed to police that he and Wheeler sodomized the 11- to 14-year-old boys with broomsticks and flashlights in at least 40 incidents, court documents show.
Yavapai County prosecutors now say they'll drop all but one assault charge and likely recommend little or no jail time if Bennett agrees to plead guilty.
Wheeler has been offered a similar deal but faces an additional assault charge for choking three boys until they passed out.
The plea agreements were presented in court last week and could be finalized Monday.
The plea deal infuriated parents of some of the boys, who say their sons were sexually assaulted and traumatized. They want Bennett and Wheeler to face sexual-assault charges, undergo mental evaluations and do more jail time.
The boys have had trouble going to the bathroom, sleep with clothes on, are afraid at night, and have undergone sexual-assault counseling, parents said.
"Our biggest concern is that these kids are going to do it again," the mother of an 11-year-old Tucson boy told The Arizona Republic. "My son had something shoved up his butt seven or eight times. If that's not sexual assault, what is?"
Prosecutor James Landis told a judge at last week's hearing that the "broomsticking" was a hazing ritual and a punishment, not sexual assault. (which begs the question, "who gave them the power to punish their collegues this way" -- brook)
The plea agreement describes the assault charge as "a non-dangerous, non-repetitive offense."
Landis told the judge the case was never viewed as "sexual in nature," partly because prosecutors could not prove the two young men had sexual intent.
But legal experts, sex-crimes prosecutors and victims'-rights lawyers say the acts clearly fit the definition of sexual assault.
"They could have been charged with sexual assault," said Sue Eazer, supervisor of the Pima County Attorney's Special Victims Unit. "Sexual assault is oftentimes not motivated by sexual desire."
Requiring proof of intent in a sexual assault case is a "red herring," according to Andrew Vachss, a New York lawyer specializing in child cases who is also a best-selling author on the subject. He said intent in this case is being used as an excuse to cut a deal.
"The bottom line is you don't have to prove sexual intent when you have such gross assault," Vachss said. "It looks like one of the most sweetheart deals of all time."
He implied it is unlikely a jury would agree with the prosecutors.
"Let the perps tell a jury, 'I inserted a foreign object into the rectums of little boys, but I had no sexual intent.'"
The prosecutor referred questions to Yavapai County Attorney Sheila Polk, who said she was ethically barred from talking about the case while it is active.
The 18 boys were chosen to attend the weeklong student government leadership skills camp in Prescott because they were among the state's top student leaders. (must be a tradition in Republican "circles" -- brook)
Records show the defendants were assigned to stay in their cabin and announced that campers who broke rules would get a "brooming" soon after the boys arrived. A police report of the incidents wasn't made until six months later, when one of the boys told a school official.
Bennett apologized for his role in court last week, saying he was "trying every way he can to rectify the situation."
His father, Sen. Ken Bennett, R-Prescott, sat behind him. A Prescott native and businessman, he hasn't spoken about his son's arrest except to issue a brief statement expressing concern as a parent. (he's concerned for being his little monster's parent)
Lawyers for the younger Bennett declined to comment but wrote the county attorney saying he "took responsibility for his role, showed remorse and admitted that this "hazing' was inappropriate."
The letter said Bennett was an honor student and active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who plans to go on a mission in September.
"A felony conviction for assault will make his desire to complete his mission impossible," they wrote.
Prosecutors told parents they plan to ask for five days in jail on the one count for each defendant, said Lynne Cadigan, a lawyer for two victims. They could face a maximum two years in prison under terms of the plea deal, but the judge could reduce the charges to a misdemeanor and no jail time.
GOPedophiles redux -- Homeland Security official arrested in soliciting sex from a 14-year old
LAKELAND -- A deputy press secretary with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security was arrested Tuesday night and charged with trying to "seduce'' a 14-year-old Polk County girl with graphic talk over the Internet.
The `"girl'' with whom Brian J. Doyle, 55, was corresponding was actually an undercover Polk County Sheriff's detective, the Sheriff's Office reported.
Doyle was arrested at his Silver Spring, Md., home at about 7:45 p.m. Tuesday on a total of 23 Polk County charges of using his computer to seduce a child and transmitting harmful materials to a minor, according to a Sheriff's Office release.
Doyle was chatting with the fictional girl online when police officers and secret service agents knocked on his door to arrest him, said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd during a late Tuesday night news conference.
They seized his home computer and other materials, Judd said.
Undercover detectives knew Doyle would be home Tuesday night because the "girl'' promised she would send nude photos of herself through a Web cam, Judd said.
`
She said, "I have access to a Web cam, and Mom's gone tonight,''' Judd said.
Detectives interviewed Doyle Tuesday night, and he acknowledged soliciting the teenager, Judd said.
He was booked into Montgomery County Jail in Maryland and will be extradited to Polk County, possibly within the week, Judd said.
Doyle works in the Homeland Security Department's Office of Public Affairs in Washington, D.C., records show.
He is often quoted in national news stories concerning the mammoth public agency, which includes the Drug Enforcement Agency, U.S. Customs, FEMA and numerous other departments. It was created in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks.
Doyle is divorced with children, Judd said.
On March 12, Doyle contacted a 14-year-old girl whose profile was posted on an AOL Web site, according to the Sheriff's Office release.
Initially, detectives thought Doyle was posing as someone working for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. But they soon learned otherwise when he sent a picture to the girl over the Internet wearing an official ``DHS tag'', Judd said.
Judd said the character detectives created told Doyle she was recovering from leukemia.
"He sent her his condolences,'' Judd said.
Doyle sent the "girl'' a box of chocolates and mentioned that he knew someone in the Tampa Bay area, Judd said.
Then the conversations got vulgar and the gestures got bolder, Judd said.
Doyle sent the "girl'' "hard core'' pornographic images through the Internet and "asked if she would engage in those kind of acts with him,'' Judd said.
Detectives are investigating whether Doyle has behaved similarly online before with actual girls.
Doyle could face federal charges for the Polk case, Judd said.
Russ Knocke, press secretary at the Department of Homeland Security, would give only a brief statement:
``We take the allegations very seriously and we will cooperate with the ongoing investigation,'' he said.
Judd said DHS and State Attorney Jerry Hill's Office contributed to the investigation.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said Doyle's actions were "vile and inexcusable.''
"We will go after child predators, no matter where they live, to protect our innocent children,'' Judd said in a released statement. "This investigation shows that the long arm of the law can reach anyone, anywhere, anytime, who tries to harm our youth.''
Judd also mused about the potential threat to national security of Doyle's behavior, particularly if the fictional girl had been a terrorist.
Doyle, who is the fourth-ranking official in the department's public affairs office, was expected to be placed on administrative leave Wednesday morning.
