16 words and 2000 american soldiers later...

"The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa."

This might seem like one little paragraph in the Chimperor's 2003 State of the Union address, but it's much more.

It's the beginning of the end.

The Bush Administration has been running a scam on us from the moment the last vote was cast in the 2000 election by The Renquist Court. The scam? Use the United State's vast power to steal oil and control wealth in the Middle East. Don't believe me? What's this?

This is what Cheney doesn't want you to know about his SECRET Energy Task Force meetings in early 2001. I've come to think of it as a map of New Hubris. Find the rest of Judicial Watch's Energy Task Force documents here.

This is what it was they compromised the Brewster-Jennings work on WMDs. It's never been about WMDs. It's been a good old resource war from the very beginning. There may well be a larger story with Plame and Brewster-Jennings. They might have known about our attempts to smuggle WMDs INTO IRAQ in order to keep the lie afloat. That's one theory. There's many more where that came from. You can come up with your own too. This is far from over.

here's the INDICTMENT

This link will take you to a PDF where you can read it for yourself.

Merry Fitzmas

Just a heads-up to all my friends and associates on the Political Party List. Today is THE DAY.

NPR WILL HAVE COVERAGE AT 1p.m. central time.

There's been all kinds of speculation and office pools. How many indictments? Who is going down? Will Cheney resign? Will Bush be fingered?

Well, today is the day, friends.

While I don't care to speculate on how many indictments, I do have this: Today marks the end of George "the Lesser"'s political career. Now, don't get too excited, because there's plenty more crazed monkeys where he came from. Remember, this mess is left-over tumor from the Nixon Administration and Watergate. And don't forget the corporatist cancer that infects the Democratic Party, by way of the DLC. But today is a good day, nonetheless.

For all the tragedy we've experiences and propagated on the world --
3,000+ dead Americans in the 9-11 attacks
2,000+ dead American soldiers
30,000+ dead Iraqi citizens
10,000+ dead or missing from Katrina
Dismantling the FBI-CIA
The Patriot Act
Stolen Elections
destabilization of the Middle East
looting of Clinton's hard-fought surplus and economic wizardry (the Peace Dividend, remember that?)
loss of Americans' safety net such: Bankruptcy, Medicaid, FEMA
attacks on our court system by religious fanatics
loss of civil discourse by way of Bush's "catapulting propaganda"
and the loss of our raging economic engine by way of oil interests historical profit-taking...

I say, savor this day. Listen closely to every word of Fitzpatrick's press conference. Read everything you can get your hands on until you understand it well enough to explain to a child. Today is History -- a small victory will be won for democracy.

We still have a long way to go but celebration is a very important part of the fight. So, let us enjoy this weekend.
Recharge those batteries and be ready to FIGHT LIKE HELL until we take our country back!

battle of the undergrounds

I'd like to welcome the trolls from "Conservative Underground" who followed me home from Democratic Underground yesterday. Apparently there's a turf battle going on between the Undergrounds. It's the staff of life for CU while maybe 2 percent of the folks on DU are even aware it exists. Reading their posts they seem pretty harmless. Here's the story:

The other morning I found this Johnson City Forum comment responding to an old blog post in my email:
As if the hurricane was Bush's fault. You're obviously not educated. Bush is not responsible for the local response, he is responsible for the NATIONAL response. It is impossible to cooridinate a National Search and Rescue to a 30 mile radius in less than several days. You should be harping on the mayor and governor who were obviously under-prepared. You should do some research and understand how local, state and federal govt works before you blame Bush. OH, and I guess Bush blew up the levy to. HAHA MORONS!
Basic month-old Rush Limbaugh boilerplate yipyap. They almost got thru the whole bit without a single misspelling, if it weren't for that darned "levee" at the end before "HAHA MORONS!"

Thinking it was at least an artifact worth sharing, I started a thread at DU.

A few minutes later, JCF gets this comment:
Looks like a little somebody needed some help from the dingbats over at DU (insert hysterical laughter) to help them with their reply!!! Bwhahahahahah!!!
Here it is cut and pasted as the poor pathetic loony lib wrote it:
and then this:
I loved how Brook ran to DU to try and formulate a response to your initial comment. Just goes to show that any moron can create a blog. How about thinking for yourself sometime instead of being a sheep for the clinically misinformed.
and:
How pathetic. This idiot couldnt come up with his own response, so he goes back to DU to have the rest of his heard speak for him... You are so fucking stupid.
then there's:
Hahahaha.... any credibility Brook had she lost when she asked the lunatics at DemocraticUnderground for help responding to a "freeper". It's all about taking digs at President Bush and people of faith with the hateful people on that site. There's more to life than politics. Brook has my pity, and I will pray for her.
So, asking questions is an act of weakness. Decisive action would have looked like slinging poo. And I'm so stupid I have to have "my heard speak for me."

Bush is your man. No doubt about that.

To summarize, internet stalkers have to JCF to claim moral authority and tell people here, on our site, that we need to "go to church":

As far as saying that Elizabeth might have a point if Bush said she needed to attend church - well, that's not an order, nor a law, and truth to tell, I'm inclined to say she does need to attend church. Is that forcing her to attend church? Is that forcing religion on her? Can't she hear a little advice without making a "federal case" out of it?
Might I suggest you read some Freud. I bet you'd like to "force" our little Lisa into your "church," you wicked minx.

Seriously, what are you getting from the social exchange, Suse? Why spend the time? Are you blowing off steam? Is it a kind of political voyerism? What are you wearing?

You have to admit, it's kinda, well -- transgressive.

Here's my bottom line, if you want to rule the world you at least need to show some manners. You do "your team" no favors by picking fights. You do humanity no favors by assuming we are opposite camps, fighting imaginary battles. We're all going down with the ship so we might as well settle in. It's gonna be a bumpy ride.

It's so,,,,, so,,,, so

pretty here now.. no more baby puke green,,,

It takes awhile for my eyes to adjust, and if I stare at one spot long enough it forms a 3D picture of a unicorn, but I think I like it..

Thanks for the overhaul Brook

on PETA and PUPPY MILLS: meet my dog, Trouble

(here's a response to a longer PETA thread found here: -- b)

Trouble is an Italian Greyhound.

Trouble was born in a puppy mill.

When Trouble was just a few weeks old, he was put in a semi-truck with hundreds of other puppies from the midwest to points unknown.

There were Iggies like him. Yorkies. Dachunds. Poodles. Boxers. Every breed of dog you can imagine.

There was no air in the truck on a hot July day.

The truck turned over in Nashville.

Trouble gasped for air in a dark truck and hearing the sounds of puppies bred for their luxurious fluffy coats died all around him. He smelled the smell of death in urine. For a creature that lives in a world of smell, that's a big deal.

If you think dogs don't have emotions. If you think dogs don't have memories, or don't feel TERROR...

...just try to put Trouble in a car. Or spend the night with him when his nightmares are so bad he screams re-living the scene in that truck. Feel his heart racing and work thru your own panic as he can't snap out of it lang after he's awake. Try to comfort him in his regular panic attack on the way to the vet. Witness his mortal fear of being put in a crate (if you've had dogs, you know what a mess it is when they won't "crate.")

It's all still there for Troubs.

I've heard that dogs have emotional/intelligence comparable to that of a 3-year old child. recently on NPR I heard Daniel Pinkwater describe teaching his dogs to "read" flash cards, so I taught Trouble and my other "iggie" Astra to "read" flash cards. They've associated card/command/treat just like Pinkwater said. They don't "know" The True Meaning of "sitting, dancing and standing," (I'm not sure I do) but they play the language game. all they want is approval.

Remind me again how that's different than people.

i was in the hospital for a summer. when i came home Trouble greeted me with almost an hour worth of clinging; crying; moaning; urgerling; snarferling; and cuddling. It was interesting for the first 5 minutes. then it was a little creepy, like witnessing a nervous breakdown.

my human friends didn't show such emotion. it's too scary. dogs are one hundred percent true. Isn't that a kind of nobility?

i don't know much about PETA and what they are doing in their latest action, but ANYTHING that brings the issue of puppy mills up for discussion is a good thing as far as I'm concerned. Our dogs challenge us to be better people. Think of them as agents of God. He really can't be around a hundred percent of the time, so He's left his buddies here to keep an eye on us. When God comes back, if he's anything like me, he'll be greeted by his dogs and they will TELL HIM EVERYTHING.

or not. whatever.

the point is, if you want a be a better human, get a dog. let them teach how to read the flash cards. let them teach how much you are missed.

Let go and let DOG.

for Strode -- on those washed-up johnson city bands

about a hundred comments back, an east tennessee bro asked, "what happened to talking about washed-up johnson city bands," i'm paraphrasing.

I'm sure you're not interested in life for JC washed-up bands' everyday life. Or are you? It's been twenty years since the Nightmares toured and Sinky released Def and Dum. It might be interesting to know that life now for "washed-up JC bands" is babies and barbeques; home ownership and Home Depot; everyone seems better looking, healthier, smarter, funnier, better writers, wildly better-off financially and predictably, no one can find time to do music. Drew's been some real cool stuff with a Bonnie Raitt-type ensemble, Suzette and the Neon Angels.

Now I have something to write about. John and Brian caught Apartment 9 when they in Nashville at Douglas Corner. Phil Leonard, Roger Rasnake, Randy Hixon and Gene Younce have a fine ensemble. I couldn't go due to feeling crappy, but judging from John's hangover the next day, they had quite the boys' nite out. The next night John played their CD that was recorded at the Down Home. Damn good stuff. http://www.apartmentnumbernine.com

Scott Pleasant is has written a brilliant CD that Drew and John have been working on. They even brought in some sidemen. So professional those boys. I wish they'd finish it. Maybe Scott will let me sneak a track out. I'll email him.

Democratic Underground - Libby and Rove are JUST THE WARM UP! Fitz is going for the BIG FISH!

Anyone who thinks there will be no indictments is not listening to what's being reported. We now know from several reporting agencies / papers / journals / media that Rove and Libby WILL BE INDICTED (merry Fitzmas). And we know they are being indicted for perjury, obstruction and Libby is being indicted for unlawful disclosure of a CIA agent's ID.

We also know that the Grand Jury Investigation is being extended.

We know that the FBI is helping by VALIDATING that there were no other sources of leaks (questioning neighbors, friends, relatives). It was reported that so far, the FBI has not found any other potential sources of identity leaks.

We know that Fitzgerald has looked into the Niger documents.

We also know from former CIA and intelligence members that Fitzgerald is taking this investigation BEYOND THE LEAK. That only says one thing to me: DSM and the lies that TOOK US TO WAR. Plamegate is inherently 'connected at the roots' with the DSM and the illegality of the IRAQ WAR. Senator Kerry spoke out today that this is the case: THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WERE LIED TO IN ORDER TO TAKE US TO WAR WITH IRAQ.

Fitzgerald is likely investigating this, as this is the most HEINOUS of crimes that was EXPOSED by Plamegate.

I now believe that Fitzgerald is going after Bush, Cheney and the entire WHIG. The Bush Administration WILL END IN DISGRACE. Those guilty WILL BE PROSECUTED. JUSTICE WILL BE SERVED.

Fitzmas, like the holiday it was derived from, symbolizes a new hope: the hope that America is waking up from its slumber to set things right."

(thanks, berni!)

it's not the Great Society. it's not the Ownership Society. it's the HOMEBOY REVOLUTION

(this is for Robert, and our new "Anonymous Cowards" as other sites often say. i'll write ya'll something specifically, but i thought you might enjoy this recent essay. whoever referred to me as moonbat... i LOVE that term. it's so cute! i like to think myself more of a MOON BUNNY tho, like the ones that my dogs keep mistaking for Satan coming over the fence at night and you catch in your headlights sneaking out for a beer run. Moon Bunny works for me. anyway, if you read this and see where it's going, you might notice that it's not left or right. liberal or conservative. clink on the link and check out the response i got to it DU. i have no fight with you guys and certainly don't have any want or need for this thing you call "credibility." i think you need to be employed or important in some way to have that. i'm just a girl with a laptop and, as i type this, a headache. at any rate, i'm glad anyone is here...left right north south big small etc. just play nice. -- peace, brook)

it's not the Great Society. it's not the Ownership Society.
it's the HOMEBOY REVOLUTION

There's blood in the water, and (surprise!) I'm not talking about indictments. I'm talking about the whole conservative program.

Here's the level of desperation: "Conservatives to Hold Press Conference on Capitol Hill Thursday; Recent Republican Spending Cut Proposals Not Enough, Say Groups" (American Conservative Union, Heritage Foundation, Family Research Council and Club for Growth).

It's going to be a public hissy fit, and here's their message: "poverty is the result of weak families."

Poor, silly conservatives can't help but sound like cartoon villains when they tout this message. They can't bring themselves to treat the poor with any dignity. So, I'm gonna help them. While they're busy with indictments we have the opportunity to advance. We can polish this turd. They are just unable to bring themselves to take their argument to its logical conclusion.

I think I can help.

WHAT WE AGREE ON
We can agree that the poverty PROGRAMS of the PAST do not address the kind of POVERTY we have NOW, and will have IN THE FUTURE.

We can agree that "the government" isn't doing a bang-up job of helping the impoverished, or anyone, really, who isn't a corporation.

We don't have to "stop Norquist," and his ilk in their drowning of Great Society programs. The Great Society was meant for a different time. The Great Society drowned in history; in Katrina -- and lay rotting on the curb outside a municipal convention center.

PRINCIPLES AND PROGRAMS
The GOP has a PRINCIPLE that anti-poverty PROGRAMS don't work. They don't have a replacement PROGRAM except to say "the free-market" will handle it. It's a faith-based program which is to say there's no program except FAITH in the free-market. Why shouldn't they have faith in the free-market? It's worked pretty well for them.

Lets see what it can do for US.

We hear the GOP talking points about "strengthening families," "supporting communities," and "creating security." These are PRINCIPLES. They don't have a PROGRAM. The Democrats have PROGRAMS that are outdated. Katrina for all it's terrible destruction, performed an important job to LAY BARE the wrong-headedness of The Great Society as it is practiced now. The Great Society is little more than a scrimmage between state and federal agencies. They don't trust each other and we don't trust either of them. It wasn't the storm that disappeared almost 10,000 people in New Orleans. It was the crumbling infrastructure followed by a strange war between state and federal leaders. Victim-blaming, race-baiting, and intense xenophobia were drizzled on top of this steaming pile of shit.

IT'S THE FAMILIES, stupid.
In the conservative mind people are poor because they can't get married or stay married. Conservatives claim that if "families" have their lives in order, they won't be a drag on society. Raise the ratio of wage-earning adults to non-wage-earning individuals and enjoy strengthened "families" and communities. The larger the group, the more efficient the economic engine. Duh.

The ONLY difference between moderates and conservatives is the DEFINITION of FAMILY. As a matter of fact, we are locked in a culture war for what constitutes a family. Ironically, conservatives say "it's the sex." People of reason say, "it's the economics." I say, lets take sex out of the family debate entirely. Anyone who has been married will tell you this is the case, anyway. I've written about the operation of SEX in this essay. It's a psychological projection and has no place in public debate.

Focus on the ECONOMIC Family
DEFINE FAMILIES AS ECONOMIC UNITS and provide the SAME benefits any economic unit enjoys. Use the metaphor of corporations. Use the metaphor of tribes. Use whatever metaphor works for your worldview, but RECOGNIZE the truth of our economic relations in the 21st century: people are pooling resources because they can't make it on their own.

People have already taken on the additional RESPONSIBILITY of people outside of their marriage -- aging parents, children of other family members, and friends in need. Pooling resources to protect the vulnerable is already an American "institution." We have moved in to fill the gap left by a broken system. IT'S TIME WE ARE SUPPORTED IN OUR CONTRIBUTION.

Our country's nobility -- big business, and local/state government -- NEED strong communities, workers and taxpayers -- to participate in societal production. They aren't going to retool business to clean up society after hurricanes, riots and epidemics. No reasonable person puts their FAITH in the free market to house a homeless person or provide care to heal people and whole communities. We rely on any other person who can help us. We turn to family, friends and open our homes to take in those who can't make it on their own. Sometimes we put them to work in our home: watching children, fixing leaks, and mowing the lawn. Sometimes we only ask that they heal; get back on their feet; and live another day.

Here's the solution: OPEN the DEFINITION of CORPORATION to include all people who "incorporate" -- who co-operate -- to provide basic economic security for each other. We are on the cusp of invention, as necessity has grown to threaten each and every one of us. NOW IS THE TIME.

HERE IS THE "PROGRAM"
-- Open up the definition of "family" to include any group of people who form an economic unit.

-- Support the New American Corporation by strengthening these families with economic incentives.

-- Apply the corporate model to families.

Rich people form corporations to support their "tribes"; to employ their good-for-nothing in-laws; to build and protect their wealth. Since we apparently can't reel in the misuse of The System by corporations, lets AT LEAST extend The System to everyone who NEEDs the support. By all means, lets CUT TAXES for these corporations.

Forget the ridiculous and divisive debates about marriage, gay or not gay. Families should be defined by their economic impact, not the kind of sex they have. Change this and declare TRUCE in the CULTURE WAR.

Look at it as "incorporation" for families and change nothing else. When I buy computers for my home business, I can deduct the cost from my taxes. Doesn't it seem FAIR that families should be able to deduct the cost of computers used in the micro-business that is their family economic unit? Are not computers and cars and appliances OPERATING EXPENSES? These operating expenses are taxed upon purchase and taxed again when they aren't recognized as meaningful economic resources that benefit society.

Put the burden of proof of familial relations on ECONOMIC IMPACT. Win the culture war. Help the needy. Cut taxes. See how this might work? Use any metaphor you like -- I call it THE HOMEBOY REVOLUTION.

word of the day, from dictionary.com

sinecure \SY-nih-kyur; SIN-ih-\, noun:
An office or position that requires or involves little or no
responsibility, work, or active service.

in case you needed a word for "it"

BILL of NON-RIGHTS -- a reminder for "conservatives" (i.e. Bushies, b/c real conservatives would understand this)

(from DU, "derby378" -- brook)

We, the People of the United States, in an attempt to help keep our nation free and safe, restore some semblance of justice, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of honest-to-God liberty to ourselves and our great-great-great-grandchildren, hereby serve notice on the spoiled-rotten, whiny, psychopathic, self-delusional, and exploitative neo-conservatives who are working so feverishly to send our beloved Nation hurtling into oblivion and demanding that we thank them for the privilege.

We hold these truths to be self evident: that a whole lot of neo-conservatives and FReepers are so confused by the Bill of Rights and are so dim that they require a Bill of NON-Rights.

ARTICLE I: You do not have the right to rob any human being in this Nation of their opportunity to seek an honest and satisfying life, regardless of their race, gender, religion (or lack thereof), creed, philosophy, ethnicity, sexual orientation, political affiliation, disability, education, credit score, favorite sports franchise, or fashion sense. If we were to let you neo-cons run things from the get-go, Abraham Lincoln would never have become President. And notice how I said "human being" instead of "person." This is to head off all those corporations that convinced the Supreme Court to treat them as "persons in law" and are using their expanded legal status to defraud the average American. Halliburton, Monsanto, Roche, Enron, and 80% of all credit card companies, I'm talking to you here...

ARTICLE II: You do not have the right to never be offended. This country is based on freedom, and that means freedom for everyone, not just you! Democrats have the ability to offend each other at least six times every day, and they still hold together as a viable political entity. What's your excuse?

ARTICLE III: You do not have the right to prevent those who have been hurt by another person's negligence from seeking reparations from those responsible for their harm. If a young child's intestines are sucked out in a kiddie pool by a dangerous drainage system, and the guy who installed it knew it was dangerous but didn't bother to install any safety features to protect kids, that guy should not expect the government to protect his ill-gotten wealth from the family of the poor kid. Instead, he'd better file for bankruptcy. Oh, wait a minute - thanks to you, he CAN'T! He'll have to pay off the family's medical bills and compensate them for pain and suffering if he can't reach an agreeable settlement. So much for his summer villa in St. Barts.

ARTICLE IV: You do not have the right to promote "family values" when you can't even define the term. All you have are empty slogans that promote the only ideal family unit as a husband and wife, both white, with 2.2 kids and a membership at the local country club. Families come in all shapes and sizes, and if you have read Steinbeck in school instead of playing hooky, you just might have learned that.

ARTICLE V: You do not have the right to deny our children a decent public education. This means that every child learns how to read, write, add, subtract, multiply, divide, speak intelligently, create a basic fire extinguisher that uses carbon dioxide, have a basic understanding of our Constitution and its amendments, explain why fossil evidence strongly suggests that Africa and South America were once connected, develop a healthy and informed understanding of human sexuality, and appreciate their civic duties to such an extent that they prevent you neo-fascists from ever seizing political power again.

ARTICLE VI: You do not have the right to deny the people clean air, clean drinking water, nourishing food, and effective medicine - all of it free from pollution and contamination. This means no "pollution credits," no acid rain, no contaminated soil, no fish tained with industrial mercury, no milk laced with rBGH and antibiotics, no meat that can give the consumer "mad cow disease," and no medications that have been diluted or adulterated in any way. And that's just for starters.

ARTICLE VII: You do not have the right to act like a dickweed when it comes to your right to keep and bear arms. A wife-beater does not have the right to chase down his victimized spouse with a knife or revolver in his hand to "shut the bitch up." Owners of .50 caliber rifles do not have the right to use Mt. Rushmore, the Grand Canyon, or endangered species in the Florida Everglades as target practice. And if you've got kids, they have no business being anywhere near a firearm unless you or your spouse are personally teaching them how to shoot. We have enough Columbines and Jonesboros to worry about without your carelessness adding to the number.

ARTICLE VIII: You do not have the right to a job. We don't care who your Daddy is. We don't care if you have friends in government. If your resume consists solely of judging fancy horses, that doesn't mean you have the right to coordinate disaster relief as, for example, the head of FEMA. If you want a job, you've got to prove that you're capable of handling it. Sure, we can take risks and give you new responsibilities that test your limitations - that can sometimes turn good workers into excellent workers. But if you want that FEMA job, start small - find work as a paramedic, a firefighter, or something that will get your feet wet. When lives and economies are at stake, incompetence is not an option.

ARTICLE IX: You do not have the right to prevent Americans from speaking in any language other than English. May I remind you that the people who built this nation spoke not only English, but also Cherokee, Comanche, Navajo, Hopi, French, Spanish, German, Irish and Scottish Gaelic, Italian, Polish, Nigerian, Senegalese, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Arabic, and Farsi? This great Nation is still a work in progress, so expect the list to get longer over time.

ARTICLE X: You do not have the right to privatize every damn thing on the planet. Our air, water, wildlife, trees, mountains, rivers, and genetic code are something that neither man nor corporation can ever own. Same goes for Social Security, our National Parks, and our brave men and women in the Armed Forces. Deal with it.

And finally...

ARTICLE XI: You do not have the right to deny the people of this Nation honest, free, open, and fair elections. If you make our voting system anything less than transparent, then you are an enemy of the people. We will no longer tolerate ballot box stuffing, rigged or faulty electronic voting machines, corrupt poll officials, or anything that denies Americans the ability to send whom THEY want to public office, not some smoke-filled backroom conspiracy.

If you can't bring yourself to agree with all eleven of these articles, you're free to leave. Good luck setting up your corporate dream state, where everything gleams with sterile serenity and the trains run on time or the conductors get shot. We've seen what happens in the past with such false Utopias, and America is too great to head down that same path to its own destruction.

Supreme Court For Dummies: reviewed by Harriet Miers on Amazon

A little thin, October 8, 2005
Reviewer: Harriet Miers - See all my reviews

Disappointing. This covers the basics, but I need details and I need them now. What is "activist?" What is "strict constructionist?" How about throwing me a bone here? I know constructionist is better, I just don't know why. I'll look on the Internet, I guess.

I wonder how many mothers' and childrens' bodies are yet to be FOUND in New Orleans.

It's international news that 2 people have been rescued after 60 HOURS. People were stranded on international television for more than a week in New Orleans.

I really woonder sometimes how Bush sleeps at night.

SPLIT PEA SOUP!

first cold day in Nashville and i couldn't be more excited about SPLIT PEA SOUP. here's my recipe:

sautee some basic aromatics -- onions, celery, carrots, bacon -- whatever.
add a bad of split peas and cover with water or broth (use broth if you have it)
cook till done.

food for days for less than a buck. yummy with tamari on top.

Miers

George W. Bush's nomination of Harriet Miers, a loyalist with a mediocre curriculam vitae and no legal track record, to the country's highest court leaves the left cautious -- and the right furious.

Then President Bush appeared in the Oval Office Monday morning to announce that he had chosen, instead, to replace O'Connor with his own lawyer, a former lottery commissioner from Texas named Harriet Miers.

We're Sorry.

people cheat -- but would they STEAL ELECTIONS?

Which is the more believable claim:

(i) All people are totally honest and when offered opportunity, motive and access to steal vast amounts of money and power -- they will abstain.
(ii) Some people are not-honest, and when given the opportunity, motive and access -- will steal in order to attain vast amounts of money and power.

If you're not worried about Election Fraud, (vote stealing, election rigging...whatever) then you are probably one of the honest people who would abstain if given opportunity, motive and access to steal vast amounts of money and power.

Given that YOU are an honest person, which is more realistic:
(i) that "all people" are like you and the ones who aren't are statistical noise; or
(ii) Not everyone is like you, and cheating in order to attain vast amounts of money and power is a possibility.

Election Fraud isn't a conspiracy theory, like little green men or Santa Claus (which is a real conspiracy, I have proof). It's a tried and true American tradition.

I was a fresh young college student once studying political "science." I thought, "science! Finally how things REALLY work." Semester after semester of Plato's Republic, Seminars on Central America -- writing Amnesty International letters -- nothing. No science. No insight into "how things REALLY work."

Then I had my moment of clarity -- a Model UN Security Council competition -- where I really woke up from my slumber.

Literally.

The competition was in Boone, NC. My team was me and this chain-smoking cracker adult student -- lets just call her Tina. We were Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and we sat next to the German Democratic Republic (GDR) -- this cute guy with sparkling green eyes and olive skin. Since we weren't permanent members and therefore likely wouldn't "win" the competition, we Germans made quick friends.

The first day we lost a shit-load of ground b/c we weren't in on the caucus action. It took us all day to realize it, but people were making deals behind the door for real shit -- cigarettes, money, sports tickets -- you name it. I was flabbergasted. The Soviet Union was the worst offender -- he was an asian evil genius who drove a muscle car. That night I went to the "social," and after seeing our faculty sponsor (an elderly ex-Anglican priest who looked like a Catholic Opus the Penguin) doing a rather good Mashed Potato to "Walk, Don't Run," I decided it was time for bed.

That night I awoke to the sound of Germany reuniting. My team mate apparently brought GDR back to the room to "caucus." They caucussed all damn nite. The caucussed on the bed. They caucussed on the floor. I eventually had to seek asylum in France's (this really sweet gay guy who travelled alone) double room.

By the end of the competition we had somehow taken Third Place. I gave Tina the ribbon. She deserved it. On the way back over the mountain we stopped at a "yard sale" sign attached to a school bus. It looked like the peddlers actually lived in this bus by the side of the road in Banner Elk. I bought a yellow plastic peace symbol for 10 cents. I still have it.

There's all kinds of cheating.

Maybe you didn't see the long lines in 2004. Lines that are more than an hour long aren't just an inconvenience, they're an obstacle. When Florida scrubbed 92,000 minorities from voter rolls, it wasn't just bad accounting -- it threw the election. PRIVATIZED voting machines with "proprietary software" isn't a modern technological advance -- it's a cloak of secrecy.

People cheat.

Back in the day, my father-in-law -- "possum cop" in the mountain of Upper East Tennessee -- fought election fraud the good old-fashioned way: following the ballots. He has tales. Multiple ballot boxes. Dumped ballots. Polling place violence. And (it's an oldie, but a goodie) flyers in the Democratic hollars that advertised inaccurate election dates.

Not everyone is honest.

See with the eyes of a thief for just a moment. Walk into a store and shoplift whatever strikes your fancy. Hone your craft. Notice how "stores" lose their meaning as takers of your money. Now, they are simply a resource. You can pay or not pay. Stealing is a state of mind. You either do it or you don't. There's nothing in the aether that keeps you in line. You make the choice. For the "honest" person who doesn't steal, it's not part of your conceptual framework to see "the cracks."

But once you've SEEN it, you don't forget it.

People who are working their asses off to protect our elections are not "oppressing" you -- the campaigner. We need you to do your work and do it well -- but mark my words on this: YOU NEED US TO OUR WORK AND DO IT WELL.

If you are de-moralized in your campaigning because everywhere you turn there's people who believe our elections are rigged, then think for a moment how the voter feels.

Election Fraud didn't just rear it's head for the first time in 2000 -- it has a LONG history in the United States. If you don't believe me, then get out in your precinct and talk to some old-timers. Caucus. Talk to the bookies who hang out in dive bars -- they are the "groundhogs" and like to brag. Sometimes police officers will talk. Sometimes, people on the city council -- if you have something to offer them.

It's not a perfect world. Look for the cracks, caucus and trust no one.

OPT-OUT of military recruiting for your kids? well, NO YEARBOOK, NO SPORTS, NO HONOR ROLL for you!

(another day another outrage. this one from Florida. -- brook)

Opting to keep your child's personal information away from military recruiters now shuts them out of any recognition.

Buried within the federal No Child Left Behind Act is a provision that requires school districts to give personal information about students to military recruiters. Parents can choose to keep that information private but some local groups say school districts make that too difficult.

Duval County (Jacksonville, Florida) parents who want to keep their children from military recruiters face an all-or-nothing decision. They can either approve the release of personal information to recruiters or give up all public recognition including being pictured in the yearbook and listed in sports programs and the honor roll.

"If I want to opt out of the military, I have to opt my child out of existence," said Bill Armstrong of Wage Peace, a group that challenged the policy. "That's not really in the spirit of compliance when there's that kind of negative result just trying to exercise their privacy rights."

GOD told him to start war (it's worse than you thought)

Armageggon tired of this.

Bush tells Palestinians that God told him to invade Afghanistan and Iraq - and create a Palestinian State.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Nabil Shaath tells the BBC: "President Bush said to all of us: 'I'm driven with a mission from God. God would tell me, 'George, go and fight those terrorists in Afghanistan.' And I did, and then God would tell me, 'George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq' And I did. And now, again, I feel God's words coming to me, 'Go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East.' And by God I'm gonna do it.''

In Elusive Peace: Israel and the Arabs, a major three-part series on BBC TWO (at 9.00pm on Monday Oct. 10, Monday Oct. 17 and Monday Oct. 24 British time), Abu Mazen, Palestinian Prime Minister, and Nabil Shaath, his Foreign Minister, describe their first meeting with President Bush in June 2003 to BBC reporters.

the higher gas prices go...

...the more I think, if I could choose just one thing to say to Bush, it'd be this:

" This, then, is held to be the duty of the man of wealth: to set an example of modest, unostentatious living, shunning display or extravagance; to provide moderately for the legitimate wants of those dependent upon him; and, after doing so, to consider all surplus revenues which come to him simply as trust funds, which he is called upon to administer, and strictly bound as a matter of duty to administer in the manner which...is best calculated to to produce the most beneficial results for the community- the man of wealth thus becoming the mere trustee and agent for his poorer breathren..."
