The "Turd Blossom" Reference
It is really hard for me to comprehend that several thousand newspapers would edit or omit "Doonesbury" from their comics page just because of the "turd blossom reference"....I think it is offensive to turd blossoms everywhere.
A bit of house keeping
Just a note to all as blogging seems to have picked up (which is nice by the way.) We are all responsible for what we write here as individuals, but Brook and Elizabeth as the publishers are responisible for everything on here weather they wrote it or not. As such, I, as a third party, ask that we all keep to the notion that we are free to talk about ourselves and public figures as much as we like (that being protected free speech) but we are not free to disclose personal information about other private parties. Please keep this in mind for the sake of Brook and Elizabeth (who has very tired fingers and is concerned about my lungs.)

"We all serve in our own way" (judith miller's better half sailing Mediterranean)
Famed editor Jason Epstein, husband of jailed New York Times reporter Judith Miller, has lately been making himself scarce at the federal facility in Virginia where his wife has been incarcerated for the past three weeks.
In a frothy social column yesterday about a celeb-glutted Mediterranean cruise, featuring everyone from Isabella Rossellini to J.K. Rowling aboard the ocean liner Silver Shadow ... Ms. Miller would have been on the cruise had she not gone to jail.'
His wife's in the slammer and he cruises the Med?
'We all serve our time in our own way,' quipped Miller's attorney Robert Bennett."

The Raw Story | Top White House staff, including Rove, get annual raises
The top pay for senior White House aides, including Chief of Staff Andrew Card, Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove and Legislative Affairs Director Candida Wolff, mushroomed to $161,000 at the beginning of July, according to a list sent to Congress and obtained by National Journal, RAW STORY can reveal.
Democrats raised the issue on the Democratic Congressional Campaign website Wednesday morning. 'Long live the era of personal responsibility!' they wrote. Rove and Vice President Cheney's Chief of Staff Scooter Libby both got raises; each has been questioned by a grand jury about their role in the outing of a covert CIA operative."
important stuff
i know, child poverty sounds like a big deal, but i just got this in an email of some other record reviews from amg:
"Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force

Neo-Classical Metal, Guitar Virtuoso, Heavy Metal, Hard Rock"
NEO-CLASSICAL METAL? semiotics be damned, can the words "metal" be "neo" and/or "classical"?
how much compassionate conservatism can one nation endure?
"Kentucky has dropped to its lowest rating in 16 years in the health and welfare of its children, according to a new national survey that found more children and parents are living in poverty.
Deborah Maple, 37, a single mother from Louisville, is living the life outlined in the charts and data of the annual "Kids Count" report that ranks Kentucky 42nd among the 50 states.
"There's been times when I didn't even have a dollar to buy a loaf of bread," said Maple, whose husband died of cancer four years ago.
The report, released yesterday by the Annie E. Casey Foundation in Baltimore, found Kentucky dropped from 39th to 42nd in overall child well-being, based on 10 measures. The latest ranking comes from state data from 2002 and 2003.
Kentucky's worst ranking came in the percentage of children -- 39 percent, up 14 percentage points from last year's report -- living in homes where parents are unemployed or lack steady work. Children in poverty also increased to 1 in 4 from 1 in 5 in last year's report.
The report is an annual measure of how children fare in all states. It found that nationwide, 18 percent -- or 12.7 million children -- were living in poverty."

A Journey Through Military Justice in Iraq
"'Who did you vote for?'
He hesitated. 'For a split second, I realized what a political
prisoner must feel like in a fascist state,' Kar said he thought to
himself."

this is what they ask american prisoners in iraq.
Cyrus Kar's zeal for 15 seconds of film cost him 55 days in prison in Iraq. american prisoners such as cyrus kar, 44-year-old documentary film maker, history buff and business teacher. he had been working on a documentary about Cyrus the Great. according to the LA Timess, "the Persian conqueror who freed the Jews from Babylon and wrote the first charters of human rights. Kar had filmed in Iran and Central Asia. Iraq, the site of ancient Babylonia, was to be last. He hoped by then that hostilities would calm."
boy was he wrong. he was caught in the cab with the guy with the washing machine timers. that's got to worth quite a journey thru the iraqi justice machines.
and so he was kept a solitary cell, given the bible and a copy of the geneva conventions. read the rest for yourself, if you like. here's the spoiler:
'After he got back, Kar was shown the statement Defense Department officials issued the day he was released. It said his freedom "highlights the effectiveness of our detainee review process."'

WASHINGTON, July 25 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Veterans for Common Sense (VCS), a nonpartisan veterans' organization with 12,000 members, called for a commission to investigate torture allegations today, in response to the Pentagon refusal to release photos and videos from Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay.
In an open letter, signed by more than 2,000 veterans and supporters (including 5 flag-rank officers and more than 200 commissioned officers), the veterans urged Congress and the President to 'commit -- immediately and publicly -- to support the creation of an independent commission to investigate and report on the detention and interrogation practices of U.S. military and intelligence agencies deployed in the war on terror.'
Charles Sheehan-Miles, a 1991 Gulf War veteran and the group's executive director, said, 'Once again the administration is fighting to prevent any possible public accountability for its policies, instead choosing to blame it all on the troops. To court-martial privates while high ranking officials get promoted is damaging to the very principle of command responsibility and undermines the U.S. military.'
Veterans for Common Sense is co-plaintiff in a lawsuit filed by a coalition of human rights and civil liberties groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Constitutional Rights. The lawsuit has generated thousands of pages of documents in the last year documenting torture, abuse and in some cases murder in U.S. detention centers.
Individuals who have seen the photos and videos, including some members of Congress and journalist Seymour Hersh, have reported they include scenes far worse than anything released from Abu Ghraib thus far, including rape and the videotaped beating of a prisoner. The courts had ordered the Pentagon to release the photos by Friday, July 22, but the Pentagon filed a last minute brief attempting to block their release.
Sheehan-Miles said, 'The Pentagon is doing everything it can to prevent the release of these graphic images, because they know that if the U.S. public were to see the true scope of the abuses, the demands for an independent investigation would be too strong to be ignored.'

THE question for Congress to ask Judge John G. Roberts' during his confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice
Can loyalty to the President also be treason?
A BUZZFLASH READER CONTRIBUTION
by One Citizen
This is possibly THE question for Congress to ask Judge John G. Roberts' during his confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice. The balance of power between the three branches of our government here in the U.S. may be at dire risk due to a long-time loyalty between the nominee and the President. The answer to this question may stop the nomination process in its tracks if the answer reveals that loyalty between friends trumps his loyalty to do justice.
Let's imagine for a moment that a member of the Bush Administration was pardoned by the president after being indicted for say, leaking a CIA undercover agent's name to the public. And let us also say for the purposes of this question that the Executive Clemency order was issued after the indictment was proffered but before the case was prosecuted. The very timing of this pardon would virtually steal the golden fleece of justice from American citizens before our Justice system could work its magic."

So what is shown on the 87 photographs and four videos from Abu Ghraib prison that the Pentagon, in an eleventh hour move, blocked from release this weekend? One clue: Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told Congress last year, after viewing a large cache of unreleased images: 'I mean, I looked at them last night, and they're hard to believe.%u201D They show acts 'that can only be described as blatantly sadistic, cruel and inhumane,' he added.
A Republican Senator suggested the same day they contained scenes of %u201Crape and murder.%u201D No wonder Rumsfeld commented then, 'If these are released to the public, obviously it's going to make matters worse.'
Yesterday, news emerged that lawyers for the Pentagon had refused to cooperate with a federal judge's order to release dozens of unseen photographs and videos from Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq by Saturday. The photos were among thousands turned over by the key %u201Cwhistleblower%u201D in the scandal, Specialist Joseph M. Darby. Just a few that were released to the press sparked the Abu Ghraib abuse scandal last year, and the video images are said to be even more shocking. "

Cheney to Generals: Prepare to Attack Iran
(link to Daily Kos)
In the event of another '9/11 type attack' according to Philip Giraldi, in the print edition of the American Conservative. And when he says attack Iran, he means ATTACK IRAN!
The Pentagon, acting under instructions from Vice President Dick Cheney's office, has tasked the United States Strategic Command (STRATCOM) with drawing up a contingency plan to be employed in response to another 9/11-type terrorist attack on the United States. The plan includes a large-scale air assault on Iran employing both conventional and tactical nuclear weapons. Within Iran there are more than 450 major strategic targets, including numerous suspected nuclear-weapons-program development sites. Many of the targets are hardened or are deep underground and could not be taken out by conventional weapons, hence the nuclear option."

O'Connor: I learned the most from Thurgood Marshall | San Jose Mercury News 7/23/05
MercuryNews.com 07/23/2005 Public has right to know about Roberts: "In one remarkable chapter of O'Connor's 2004 memoir, "The Majesty of the Law: Reflections of a Supreme Court Justice,'' she credited senior colleague Thurgood Marshall for sharing his experiences. "Although all of us come to the court with our own personal histories and experiences,'' she wrote, "Justice Marshall brought a special perspective. His was the eye of a lawyer who saw the deepest wounds in the social fabric and used the law to help heal them.'' She had "experienced gender discrimination enough,'' she said once. But until she worked with Marshall she had no "personal sense'' of being "a minority in a society that cared primarily for the majority.''" Damn. Now that's the kind of honesty the US (and Tennessee) need very, very badly in order to act positively - before it's too late. Black American author James Baldwin wrote about this reality 40 years ago in The Fire Next Time: " ... at the center of this dreadful storm, this vast confusion, stand the black people of this nation, who must now share the fate of a nation that has never accepted them, to which they were brought in chains. Well, if this is so, one has no choice but to do all in one's power to change that fate, and at no matter what risk."

Did You Know Wal-Mart Has A 'Patriot-Act' FIle In Its Stores
(here's yet another reason NOT to shop at Wal-Mart. looks like they are keeping files on their arab customers!)
"I work in the accounting office at a Wal-Mart and the other day I stumbled upon some screen on our system that was marked 'Patriot-Act'.
I looked in it and found a list of every transaction made by customers, a majority of whom had arab-sounding names. There were some non-arab names on the list, but most of them appeared to be arab, or at least, foreign.
I wonder if all stores have a patriot-act file, or if that's just something unique to Wal-mart. Anyone hear of anything like this anywhere else?"

"ORLANDO, Fla. -- A Florida judge has ruled in favor of a Christian theme park seeking an exemption from property taxes.
The Holy Land Experience in Orlando is operated by a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian ministry called Zion's Hope, which is devoted to converting Jews to Christianity.
It had been granted only limited exemptions for administrative and education facilities.
The Orange County Property Appraiser's office had denied the group's broader request in 2001, arguing the park was a tourist attraction rather than a church.
But Judge Cynthia MacKinnon said all of the park is tax-exempt.
In her ruling, the judge said Zion's Hope is using The Holy Land Experience "to spread what it considers to be God's word."
The park features scenes from ancient Jerusalem and biblical settings complete with costumed characters.
The $16 million, 15-acre park opened in 2001."

Turd Blossom Must Go or where is that Jeff Gannon now that democracy needs an insider?

There is no moral case for keeping Karl Rove on the government payroll.
"Inside the Bush administration, lying to reporters doesn't even come close to being a firing offense, so neither Rove nor Scott McClellan, who first called the accusation that Rove exposed Plame "totally ridiculous" and then flat-out said "it is simply not true," need fear for his job on that score. But Rove blew the cover of an undercover CIA official. If Dubya doesn't fire the man he nicknamed "Turd Blossom" for this offense, he's an even bigger hack than I think."

ROVE WAS THE SOURCE, KNOWINGLY AND IN THE SPIRIT OF REVENGE
By Michael Isikoff
NewsweekJuly 18 issue -
It was 11:07 on a Friday morning, July 11, 2003, and Time magazine correspondent Matt Cooper was tapping out an e-mail to his bureau chief, Michael Duffy.
'Subject: Rove/P&C,' (for personal and confidential), Cooper began. 'Spoke to Rove on double super secret background for about two mins before he went on vacation ...' Cooper proceeded to spell out some guidance on a story that was beginning to roil Washington.
He finished, 'please don't source this to rove or even WH [White House]' and suggested another reporter check with the CIA."

a story you need to know about: how freepers murdered Andy Stephenson
The next time you think that your blogging doesn't impact the world, remember Andy Stephenson
Andy was an election fraud activist, working tirelessly for paper ballots and hand counts.
Andy suddenly became sick after attending the Nashville Election Fraud Convention.
He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and was told he needed a procedure that could only be done John's Hopkins, and that his insurance would not cover. He needed $50,000 and he needed it QUICK in order to start the procedure in a timely fashion.
Folks at Democratic Underground RAISED THE $50,000 IN A WEEKEND and he was ready to go. Except for one thing. Folks over at The Free Republic didn't want "the liberals" to get away with raising money so quickly. Here's what one freeper wrote on the suject:
"Even if Andy was sick, it's impoirtant to stop scams before they happen when Liberals try to raise money.
The bad thing about the Andy situation is that now the DUmmys know how to raise money quickly. If Andy was scamming people (and I think he was) then it would have been MUCH EASIER to nip future Liberal fund-raiseing efforts in the bud."

Rove 'Knowingly' Refusing Interviews on Plame Leak -- Editor & Publisher

By E&P Staff
Published: July 04, 2005 6:20 PM ET
NEW YORK Two days after his lawyer confirmed that his name turned up as a source in Matthew Cooper's notes on the Valerie Plame/CIA case, top White House adviser Karl Rove refused to answer questions about the development today.
Rove traveled with President Bush when he spoke at a July 4 event in West Virginia today, but refused all requests for interviews about his role in the controversy that threatens to send Cooper, of Time magazine, and Judith Miller of The New York Times to jail this week for refusing to reveal sources. ConyersBlog: "Fixing the Facts and Intelligence Around the Policy
Talking Points Memo is Pursuing a New Aspect of the Story
How do the facts and intelligence get fixed around the policy, as the highest ranking British government officials have alleged the Bush Administration was doing to justify the Iraq war...
How do the facts and intelligence get fixed around the policy, as the highest ranking British government officials have alleged the Bush Administration was doing to justify the Iraq war?
One way would be by having the Vice President hover over the shoulders of intelligence analysts. This paragraph caught my eye from a 2003 Washington Post article. Notice how close the wording of the last sentence is to the language in the Downing Street Minutes:
'Vice President Cheney and his most senior aide made multiple trips to the CIA over the past year to question analysts studying Iraq's weapons programs and alleged links to al Qaeda, creating an environment in which some analysts felt they were being pressured to make their assessments fit with the Bush administration's policy objectives, according to senior intelligence officials.
'You could also pressure your top anti-terrorism expert to cook the books.
This from 60 Minutes' Lesley Stahl:
'After the president returned to the White House on Sept. 11, he and his top advisers, including Clarke, began holding meetings about how to respond and retaliate. As Clarke writes in his book, he expected the administration to focus its military response on Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda. He says he was surprised that the talk quickly turned to Iraq.
'Rumsfeld was saying that we needed to bomb Iraq,' Clarke said to Stahl. 'And we all said ... no, no. Al-Qaeda is in Afghanistan. We need to bomb Afghanistan. And Rumsfeld said there aren't any good targets in Afghanistan. And there are lots of good targets in Iraq. I said, 'Well, there are lots of good targets in lots of places, but Iraq had nothing to do with it.
'Initially, I thought when he said, 'There aren't enough targets in-- in Afghanistan,' I thought he was joking.
''I think they wanted to believe that there was a connection, but the CIA was sitting there, the FBI was sitting there, I was sitting there saying we've looked at this issue for years. For years we've looked and there's just no connection.
'Clarke says he and CIA Director George Tenet told that to Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Colin Powell, and Attorney General John Ashcroft.
Clarke then tells Stahl of being pressured by Mr. Bush.
'The president dragged me into a room with a couple of other people, shut the door, and said, 'I want you to find whether Iraq did this.' Now he never said, 'Make it up.' But the entire conversation left me in absolutely no doubt that George Bush wanted me to come back with a report that said Iraq did this.
'I said, 'Mr. President. We've done this before. We have been looking at this. We looked at it with an open mind. There's no connection.'
'He came back at me and said, 'Iraq! Saddam! Find out if there's a connection.' And in a very intimidating way. I mean that we should come back with that answer. We wrote a report.
''But, when all else fails, and you lack that 'smoking gun' that could turn into a 'mushroom cloud,' maybe you just start making stuff up. I am sure many of you follow Josh Marshall's Talking Points Memo blog. Over the last year or so, Mr. Marshall has been asking a question that seems so obviously interesting, one has to wonder why he seems to be one of the only journalists asking it.
We are all now familiar with the President's false statement in his 2003 State of the Union address that Iraq was seeking to buy Uranium from Niger. I trust that all of my readers know that, prior to this address, former Ambassador Joe Wilson was sent to Niger by the Central Intelligence Agency to investigate these claims and the documents purporting to offer support for this allegation. He reported back that he had found no basis for the claims. Shocked that the allegation had found its way into the most important speech a President can give, a speech that constitutes a President's assessment to Congress about the stability and security of the United States, Wilson went public about the falsity of the allegation.
In an effort to smear Wilson and intimidate and other prospective whistleblowers, high ranking Administration officials leaked, in violation of federal law, the name of Wilson's wife and the fact that she was a clandestine operative for the CIA. A grand jury has been impaneled to determine who the leaker or leakers are, and what legal actions should be taken against them. (One journalist is now saying that the leaker was Karl Rove.)
But, as Mr. Marshall has been asking, what about the documents that purported to prove that Iraq was seeking to purchase uranium from Niger, and were later proven to be obvious forgeries? Who forged them, and whose request and why? Mr. Marshall may be closer to the answer. This paragraph caught my eye this morning:
'I've gotten hints or suggestions from several sources over the last month that new information is bubbling to the surface, not about who leaked Valerie Plame's identity, but who was behind the underlying caper that started the whole drama afoot in the first place: those phoney Niger uranium documents.
'This is a very big story."
Bush "Fixing" the Death Count?
baltimore.indymedia.org/newswire/display/10554
Is Bush "fixing" the number of U.S. military death count by redefining "death"?
The above article suggests "DoD lists currently being very quietly circulated indicate almost 9,000 [U.S. military] dead"; this far exceeds the "official" death count of 1,831.
How can this be? It's largely because "U.S. Military Personnel who died in German hospitals or en route to German hospitals have not previously been counted."
In other words, it depends on the meaning of the word, "dead."

The Huffington Post | Lawrence O'Donnell updates Rove story
Update on Rove -- by Lawrence O'Donnell
"On Friday, I broke the story that the e-mails that Time turned over to the prosecutor that day reveal that Karl Rove is the source Matt Cooper is protecting. That provoked Rove%u2019s lawyer, Robert Luskin, to interrupt his holiday weekend to do a little defense work with Newsweek and the Los Angeles Times. On Saturday, Luskin decided to reveal that Rove did have at least one conversation with Cooper, but Luskin told the Times he would not characterize the substance of the conversation."
Luskin claimed that the prosecutor "asked us not to talk about what Karl has had to say." This is highly unlikely. Prosecutors have absolutely no control over what witnesses say when they leave the grand jury room. Rove can tell us word-for-word what he said to the grand jury and would if he thought it would help him. And notice that Luskin just did reveal part of Rove's grand jury testimony, the fact that he had a conversation with Cooper. Rove would not let me get one day of traction on this story if he could stop me. If what I have reported is not true, if Karl Rove is not Matt Cooper's source, Rove could prove that instantly by telling us what he told the grand jury.
Nothing prevents him from doing that, except a good lawyer who is trying to keep him out of jail."

Rove, who is President George W. Bush's deputy chief of staff, was named as a source by two lawyers who asked not to be identified.

Witnesses told a federal grand jury President George W. Bush knew about, and took no action to stop, the release of a covert CIA operative's name to a journalist in an attempt to discredit her husband, a critic of administration policy in Iraq. And Bush hired a lawyer to defend himself.
From CBS News....President Bush said Thursday he was ready to cooperate in the grand jury investigation of who leaked the name of a covert CIA operative last year and that he had consulted with an attorney to determine if he needs legal advice.
