It is really hard for me to comprehend that several thousand newspapers would edit or omit "Doonesbury" from their comics page just because of the "turd blossom reference"....I think it is offensive to turd blossoms everywhere.

Rove and Vice President Cheney's Chief of Staff Scooter Libby both got raises; each has been questioned by a grand jury about their role in the outing of a covert CIA operative."

"Kentucky has dropped to its lowest rating in 16 years in the health and welfare of its children, according to a new national survey that found more children and parents are living in poverty.

Deborah Maple, 37, a single mother from Louisville, is living the life outlined in the charts and data of the annual "Kids Count" report that ranks Kentucky 42nd among the 50 states.

"There's been times when I didn't even have a dollar to buy a loaf of bread," said Maple, whose husband died of cancer four years ago.

The report, released yesterday by the Annie E. Casey Foundation in Baltimore, found Kentucky dropped from 39th to 42nd in overall child well-being, based on 10 measures. The latest ranking comes from state data from 2002 and 2003.

Kentucky's worst ranking came in the percentage of children -- 39 percent, up 14 percentage points from last year's report -- living in homes where parents are unemployed or lack steady work. Children in poverty also increased to 1 in 4 from 1 in 5 in last year's report.

The report is an annual measure of how children fare in all states. It found that nationwide, 18 percent -- or 12.7 million children -- were living in poverty."

WASHINGTON, July 25 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Veterans for Common Sense (VCS), a nonpartisan veterans' organization with 12,000 members, called for a commission to investigate torture allegations today, in response to the Pentagon refusal to release photos and videos from Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay.

In an open letter, signed by more than 2,000 veterans and supporters (including 5 flag-rank officers and more than 200 commissioned officers), the veterans urged Congress and the President to 'commit -- immediately and publicly -- to support the creation of an independent commission to investigate and report on the detention and interrogation practices of U.S. military and intelligence agencies deployed in the war on terror.'

Charles Sheehan-Miles, a 1991 Gulf War veteran and the group's executive director, said, 'Once again the administration is fighting to prevent any possible public accountability for its policies, instead choosing to blame it all on the troops. To court-martial privates while high ranking officials get promoted is damaging to the very principle of command responsibility and undermines the U.S. military.'

Veterans for Common Sense is co-plaintiff in a lawsuit filed by a coalition of human rights and civil liberties groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Constitutional Rights. The lawsuit has generated thousands of pages of documents in the last year documenting torture, abuse and in some cases murder in U.S. detention centers.

Individuals who have seen the photos and videos, including some members of Congress and journalist Seymour Hersh, have reported they include scenes far worse than anything released from Abu Ghraib thus far, including rape and the videotaped beating of a prisoner. The courts had ordered the Pentagon to release the photos by Friday, July 22, but the Pentagon filed a last minute brief attempting to block their release.

Sheehan-Miles said, 'The Pentagon is doing everything it can to prevent the release of these graphic images, because they know that if the U.S. public were to see the true scope of the abuses, the demands for an independent investigation would be too strong to be ignored.'

The balance of power between the three branches of our government here in the U.S. may be at dire risk due to a long-time loyalty between the nominee and the President. The answer to this question may stop the nomination process in its tracks if the answer reveals that loyalty between friends trumps his loyalty to do justice.

Let's imagine for a moment that a member of the Bush Administration was pardoned by the president after being indicted for say, leaking a CIA undercover agent's name to the public. And let us also say for the purposes of this question that the Executive Clemency order was issued after the indictment was proffered but before the case was prosecuted. The very timing of this pardon would virtually steal the golden fleece of justice from American citizens before our Justice system could work its magic."

Loved reading about the music scene in the 80's. I was there when Final Curtain was born...original groupie! Anyway, lots of things have changed, from bad to worse to better now! Did You Know Wal-Mart Has A 'Patriot-Act' FIle In Its Stores

(here's yet another reason NOT to shop at Wal-Mart. looks like they are keeping files on their arab customers!)

"I work in the accounting office at a Wal-Mart and the other day I stumbled upon some screen on our system that was marked 'Patriot-Act'.

I looked in it and found a list of every transaction made by customers, a majority of whom had arab-sounding names. There were some non-arab names on the list, but most of them appeared to be arab, or at least, foreign.

I wonder if all stores have a patriot-act file, or if that's just something unique to Wal-mart. Anyone hear of anything like this anywhere else?"

The Holy Land Experience in Orlando is operated by a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian ministry called Zion's Hope, which is devoted to converting Jews to Christianity.

It had been granted only limited exemptions for administrative and education facilities.

The Orange County Property Appraiser's office had denied the group's broader request in 2001, arguing the park was a tourist attraction rather than a church.

But Judge Cynthia MacKinnon said all of the park is tax-exempt.

In her ruling, the judge said Zion's Hope is using The Holy Land Experience "to spread what it considers to be God's word."

The park features scenes from ancient Jerusalem and biblical settings complete with costumed characters.

How do the facts and intelligence get fixed around the policy, as the highest ranking British government officials have alleged the Bush Administration was doing to justify the Iraq war?

One way would be by having the Vice President hover over the shoulders of intelligence analysts. This paragraph caught my eye from a 2003 Washington Post article. Notice how close the wording of the last sentence is to the language in the Downing Street Minutes:

'Vice President Cheney and his most senior aide made multiple trips to the CIA over the past year to question analysts studying Iraq's weapons programs and alleged links to al Qaeda, creating an environment in which some analysts felt they were being pressured to make their assessments fit with the Bush administration's policy objectives, according to senior intelligence officials.

'You could also pressure your top anti-terrorism expert to cook the books.

This from 60 Minutes' Lesley Stahl:

'After the president returned to the White House on Sept. 11, he and his top advisers, including Clarke, began holding meetings about how to respond and retaliate. As Clarke writes in his book, he expected the administration to focus its military response on Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda. He says he was surprised that the talk quickly turned to Iraq.

'Rumsfeld was saying that we needed to bomb Iraq,' Clarke said to Stahl. 'And we all said ... no, no. Al-Qaeda is in Afghanistan. We need to bomb Afghanistan. And Rumsfeld said there aren't any good targets in Afghanistan. And there are lots of good targets in Iraq. I said, 'Well, there are lots of good targets in lots of places, but Iraq had nothing to do with it.

'Initially, I thought when he said, 'There aren't enough targets in-- in Afghanistan,' I thought he was joking.

''I think they wanted to believe that there was a connection, but the CIA was sitting there, the FBI was sitting there, I was sitting there saying we've looked at this issue for years. For years we've looked and there's just no connection.

'Clarke says he and CIA Director George Tenet told that to Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Colin Powell, and Attorney General John Ashcroft.

Clarke then tells Stahl of being pressured by Mr. Bush.

'The president dragged me into a room with a couple of other people, shut the door, and said, 'I want you to find whether Iraq did this.' Now he never said, 'Make it up.' But the entire conversation left me in absolutely no doubt that George Bush wanted me to come back with a report that said Iraq did this.

'I said, 'Mr. President. We've done this before. We have been looking at this. We looked at it with an open mind. There's no connection.'

'He came back at me and said, 'Iraq! Saddam! Find out if there's a connection.' And in a very intimidating way. I mean that we should come back with that answer. We wrote a report.

''But, when all else fails, and you lack that 'smoking gun' that could turn into a 'mushroom cloud,' maybe you just start making stuff up. I am sure many of you follow Josh Marshall's Talking Points Memo blog. Over the last year or so, Mr. Marshall has been asking a question that seems so obviously interesting, one has to wonder why he seems to be one of the only journalists asking it.

We are all now familiar with the President's false statement in his 2003 State of the Union address that Iraq was seeking to buy Uranium from Niger. I trust that all of my readers know that, prior to this address, former Ambassador Joe Wilson was sent to Niger by the Central Intelligence Agency to investigate these claims and the documents purporting to offer support for this allegation. He reported back that he had found no basis for the claims. Shocked that the allegation had found its way into the most important speech a President can give, a speech that constitutes a President's assessment to Congress about the stability and security of the United States, Wilson went public about the falsity of the allegation.

In an effort to smear Wilson and intimidate and other prospective whistleblowers, high ranking Administration officials leaked, in violation of federal law, the name of Wilson's wife and the fact that she was a clandestine operative for the CIA. A grand jury has been impaneled to determine who the leaker or leakers are, and what legal actions should be taken against them. (One journalist is now saying that the leaker was Karl Rove.)

But, as Mr. Marshall has been asking, what about the documents that purported to prove that Iraq was seeking to purchase uranium from Niger, and were later proven to be obvious forgeries? Who forged them, and whose request and why? Mr. Marshall may be closer to the answer. This paragraph caught my eye this morning:

'I've gotten hints or suggestions from several sources over the last month that new information is bubbling to the surface, not about who leaked Valerie Plame's identity, but who was behind the underlying caper that started the whole drama afoot in the first place: those phoney Niger uranium documents.

'This is a very big story."

The above article suggests "DoD lists currently being very quietly circulated indicate almost 9,000 [U.S. military] dead"; this far exceeds the "official" death count of 1,831.

How can this be? It's largely because "U.S. Military Personnel who died in German hospitals or en route to German hospitals have not previously been counted."

In other words, it depends on the meaning of the word, "dead."

"On Friday, I broke the story that the e-mails that Time turned over to the prosecutor that day reveal that Karl Rove is the source Matt Cooper is protecting. That provoked Rove%u2019s lawyer, Robert Luskin, to interrupt his holiday weekend to do a little defense work with Newsweek and the Los Angeles Times. On Saturday, Luskin decided to reveal that Rove did have at least one conversation with Cooper, but Luskin told the Times he would not characterize the substance of the conversation."

Luskin claimed that the prosecutor "asked us not to talk about what Karl has had to say." This is highly unlikely. Prosecutors have absolutely no control over what witnesses say when they leave the grand jury room. Rove can tell us word-for-word what he said to the grand jury and would if he thought it would help him. And notice that Luskin just did reveal part of Rove's grand jury testimony, the fact that he had a conversation with Cooper. Rove would not let me get one day of traction on this story if he could stop me. If what I have reported is not true, if Karl Rove is not Matt Cooper's source, Rove could prove that instantly by telling us what he told the grand jury.

Rove a source in case of outed CIA spy, attorneys tell Newsweek - Yahoo!

WASHINGTON (AFP) - E-mails surrendered by Time magazine to a grand jury probing the leak of a CIA agent's identity show that top White House aide Karl Rove was one of the sources, Newsweek magazine reported, citing two lawyers involved in the case.

Rove, who is President George W. Bush's deputy chief of staff, was named as a source by two lawyers who asked not to be identified.
